Discovery of unpublished chart associated with James Cook

The Path to Promotion: A Chart of Newfoundland

The April 2013 issue of Cook's Log contains an article with the above title about the finding of an unpublished manuscript chart of Newfoundland which Admiral Sir William Parker (1742-1802) prepared as a young man after working with James Cook on the survey of Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1760s.

As Daphne Joynes continued her research, the significance of the chart for the history of exploration in Newfoundland and cartography in the North Atlantic, and for the study of naval patronage patterns surrounding James Cook’s pre-Pacific associates, became apparent.

This article first appeared in IMCoS Journal, number 131, pages 7-14, published by the International Map Collectors’ Society in December 2012.
