On 8 November, 1769, James Cook wrote “heel'd and scrub'd both sides of the Ship and sent a party of men a Shore to Cut wood and fill water. The Natives brought of to the Ship and sold us for small peeces of Cloth - as much fish as served all hands, they were of the Mackarel kind and as good as ever was eat”.

Joseph Banks wrote “Fine weather... We went ashore and botanizd with our usual good success which could not be doubted in a countrey so totaly new”.
