7 October, 1769

On 7 October, 1769, James Cook wrote “At day light made sail in for the land. At Noon it bore from SW to NWBN distant 8 Leagues... At 5 PM seeing the opening of a Bay that appear'd to run pretty far inland, hauled our wind and stood in for it, but as soon as night came on we kept plying on and off”.

Joseph Banks wrote “This morn the Land plainly seen from the deck appears to be very large... in many parts 3, 4 and 5 ranges of hills are seen one over the other and a chain of Mountains over all, some of which appear enormously high. Much difference of opinion and many conjectures about Islands, rivers, inlets &c, but all hands seem to agree that this is certainly the Continent we are in search of”.
