On 6 December, 1769, James Cook wrote “Had light airs from the land and some times Calm untill 9 oClock AM, by this time we had got out of the Bay [of Islands] and a breeze springing up at NNW, we stood out to sea”.

Joseph Banks wrote “In the morn we were clear of all our dangers and at sea to our no small satisfaction notwithstanding the wind was as foul as possible”.
