On 31 March, 1770, James Cook wrote “I have before made mention of our quiting New-Zeland with an intention to steer to the westward which we accordingly did takeing my our departure from Cape Fare-well”.

Joseph Banks wrote “Our rout being settled... we this morn weighd and saild with a fair breeze of wind inclind to fall in with Van Diemens Land as near as possible to the place where Tasman left it”.
