31 July, 1770

On 31 July, 1770, James Cook wrote “At 2 oClock in the AM I had thoughts of trying to warp the ship out of the harbour but upon my going first out in a boat I found it blow'd too fresh for such an attempt... In the PM the Yawl came in with two rays which together weigh'd 265 lb   it blowed too hard all the time they were out for strikeing turtle”.

Joseph Banks wrote “Morning cloudy and Boisterous enough; even clear with less wind which supplyd hopes at least for tomorrow”.
