3 January, 1771

On 3 January, 1771, James Cook wrote “In the morning came to sail having very squally variable weather. At Noon Cracatoa west 2 Leags... At 5 pm Anchord in 28 fathom water, Cracatoa West distant 3 miles”.

Joseph Banks wrote “This morn when we rose we saw that there were many houses and much Cultivation upon Cracatoa, so that probably a ship might meet with refreshments who chose to touch here in preference to Princes Island. The wind was so foul and balkd us so often that after having saild the whole day we were glad at night to come back again to our old Birth under Cracatoa”.
