On 28 December, 1770, James Cook wrote “At day light in the Morning weighd a gain and kept plying to windward between Edam and Duffins Island but [gained] very little owing to the Variableness of the winds... In the Evening Anchord in 12 fathom water”.


Joseph Banks wrote “Sea breeze was faint again today so that we got but little on our way”.
