On 20 June, 1771, James Cook wrote “Fresh gales & Clowdy with some showers of rain. At day light in the morning saw a Sail a head standing to the E. A Swell from the NNW... In the PM Saw a Sail a Stern Standing to the SE”,

 

Joseph Banks wrote “Saw a large ship ahead which on our lowering our foretopsail hoisted a flag at her maintopmast head; she soon however made sail and left us”.
