On 17 August, 1768, the newspaper, Gazetteer and New Daily Advertise, London, reported “Yesterday morning, Joseph Banks, of New Burlington-Street, Esq., and Doctor Solander, of the British Museum, set out for Plymouth, to embark on board his Majesty’s Ship the Endeavour”.
James Cook, at Plymouth, wrote in his journal, “Employ’d clearing away in the After Hold”.
