On 16 June, 1771, James Cook wrote “A Stead[y] breeze & pleasent weather... At Day light in the Morning saw a Sail ahead which we came up and spoke with a little after 10 o Clock. She proved a Portuguese Ship from Rio de Janeiro bound to Lisbon”.


Joseph Banks wrote “Spoke an homeward-bound Brazil-man and soon left him”.
