On 16 July, 1771, according to Endeavour’s log, “At 2 AM pass’d Gravesend... came too in Gallions Reach, the pilot left the ship, sent a boat to Town & the Gunner to Woolwich to get a hoy for the guns. Emply’d getting the gunners stores to hand, carried small arms ashore”.

A hoy was a small vessel used for carrying goods to or from a ship.
