On 14 August, 1768, James Cook wrote in his journal “At ½ Past 8 Anchord in Plymth Sound in 9 fam [i.e. fathom]… At 4 AM Weighd & Saild further into the Sound”.

Cook wrote to the Admiralty Secretary, “Plymouth Sound.  Please to acquaint their Lordships that I arrived here this day in His Majesty's Bark Endeavour under my command, & shall make all the Dispatch in my power to proceed to Sea”.
