12 January, 1769

On 12 January, 1769, James Cook wrote “the wind coming to the Northward, obliged us to Tack and stand NW ward being then about 5 Miles from the shore and had 23 fathom Sandy bottom”.

Joseph Banks wrote “After dinner a small breeze sprung up and to our great Joy we discoverd an opening into the land and stood in for it in great hopes of finding a harbour; however after having ran within a mile of the shore were obliged to stand off again as there was no appearance of shelter and the wind was on shore”.
