12 February, 1769

On 12 February, 1769, James Cook wrote “Having for some time past generally found the Ship by Obsern to the Northward of the Logg, which is not owing to a current as I at first imagined but to a wrong division of the Log line being 2½ feet in each knot; but this is now rectified”.

It seems the space between the knots on Endeavour’s log line was too great, so she seemed to be sailing slower than she actually was.

Joseph Banks wrote “Foul wind, but prodigious fine weather and smooth water makes amends to us at least”.
