James Cook captained Resolution, accompanied by Discovery captained by Charles Clerke. 
Resolution sailed from Plymouth on 12 July, 1776.
Discovery sailed from Plymouth on 1 August, 1776, joining Resolution at Cape Town, South Africa, on 10 November, 1776.
