Standing on a granite base, the statue is a replica of the one at Whitby, England by Sir John Tweed, R.A.

History:
Donated by Mr Andrew Stenhouse, a retired contractor who lived at Beaconsfield Parade, St Kilda, he was interested in the reclamation of the foreshore in front of his dwelling .
The monument cost £1500, and was probably the first major memorial to Captain Cook in Victoria.
The statue was unveiled on Monday December 7th, 1914 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Arthur Stanley. Gathered were Commonwealth and State notables and hundreds of St Kilda residents.
