Description: On permanent display inside St Cuthbert’s Church, Marton in Cleveland. The parish register, opened at the entry of James Cook’s baptism on 3rd November, 1728, is displayed in a specially designed cabinet.
History: The display cabinet was made by the Thompson craftsmen of Kilburn, Yorkshire. During a service on Sunday 7th November, 1993, led by the vicar Rev Gordon Fisher, the cabinet was dedicated by Gordon Bates, the Bishop of Whitby, and officially unveiled by HM Lord Lieutenant for Cleveland, Lord Guisborough.
Inscription:
This case was Dedicated by the Bishop of Whitby, Gordon Bates,
and was made by Thompson of Kilburn.
Also on a Brass Plaque on the top of the case:
Baptismal Record of Captain James Cook R.N., F.R.S.
Born Marton, now a part of Middlesbrough
October 27th 1728.
