My father always told me that we were direct descendants of James, I never gave it much thought until I got older, although it would be cool to know for sure.

John, thank you for the information about yourself. We are reliant on the information which we receive from members of the public, and I can assure you that your omission from the family tree was not deliberate. I will try and ensure that your details are included on the Cook / Fleck family tree when it is next updated.

Terence, I am glad that you have read Captain James Cook's original will. He wrote it in June 1776, immediately before embarking upon his third and final voyage. I am intrigued by the other will and have never heard of another a will like it. I can only think that it was written by another Captain James Cook. That is not as strange as it sounds, as in the late 1700s it is known that there were three officers in the Royal Navy, all named James Cook. And I presume that there were more Captains Cook sailing in the merchant navy.

My name is Terry Tweedie from Australia. Can you enlighten me on a newspaper article I have in my files. It is titled Captain Cooks Will. This came from "Captain Cook in BBC-1s Blue Peter". Little known fact of Cpt. Cooks life. Shortly before he died he made his will but did not know of any relatives as his six brothers and sisters were already dead. Finally he left his fortune to any known relative who could be found but they could not receive the money for 100 years. The relative found then had to divide it up amongst all those relatives . A female relative was eventually found married to a Tweedie. At the end of 100 years the Tweedie family had become so numerous they each received 30 pounds. At the end of the article it states " I was one of them -- Eviene Whittow, Brockenhurst. Now I dont know what paper this was in as I just have a photocopy of the article that was printed without any dates or Newspaper names. This was given to me many years ago by a lady who claimed to be a Tweedie from Central NSW Australia. She thought I might be interested. I have viewed Cpt Cooks Will online and it appears he did have some relatives alive when he died. Seems a bit confusing. I was just intrigued so could you enlighten me.

Hi My paternal grandfather (John Pool Morrison) was 2nd cousin to Horatio Stratton Carter and I believe Horatio was a direct descendant of Margaret Cook via her daughter Grace Carter,. My late aunt Joan Marshall Morrison received a letter from Rod Fleck in Australia, confirming our lineage to the Cook family. Sadly my aunt passed away in 2013 and so far been unable to find the aforementioned letter. Though my aunt stated she must have lost it during one of her many house moves.

Mackenzie, thank you for your enquiry. Most people who have Captain James Cook as a Great Uncle are related through descent from his sister Margaret. There are no known lines of descent from any of his brothers.
