Jennifer, there are many descendants of Margaret Cook named Thompson.
Go to the following website for the Cook/Fleck family tree and see if you can find your Thompson ancestor.

Oliver, please tell me the name of your Grandad Fleck, and the year in which he was born, and I will see if there is any connection with the Cook-Fleck line.

Well, I have been trying to find a full list of the Cook family tree but it always stops in the early 1900s however I found your link in the other comments and I'm not on it so I'm thinking otherwise also I was born in 1999 in South Shields. My grandad has always said to me that we might be related. We also visited the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Middlesbrough which was great fun as a kid thinking you are related to Captain James Cook :)

Margaret, thank you for your enquiry. The best on-line family tree covering the Cook and Fleck families can be found at http://captaincookfamilytree.com
None of Captain Cook's children went on to marry and have children of their own. So the presence of the surname Cook is not a sign that you are descended from the Captain. James Cook's sister Margaret married a fisherman from Redcar and their descendants can be found all over the world. But the surname Peat is absent from that line of descent.

There is a family story that my Grandmother, Margaret Peat nee Cook was descended from the Captain Cook family. She lived in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, 1880s to 1950s.

To Jodi and Kevin re Rebecca Shield (nee Cook) b1818 Walcott Lincolnshire, died 1902 Forbes NSW. I can't speak as to Rebecca Cook's connection but I believe through DNA testing that the Walcott, Lincolnshire Cooks were descended from the same Cook family in Roxburghshire. I am working on the presumption as you said that their line is from a brother of James Cook senior and his parents were John Cook and Jean Duncan. Or maybe an older generation.
I have a separate Cook line in Yorkshire from a John Cook who married in 1810. I have a DNA match to a descendant of Margaret Cook and James Fleck. I also have a DNA match to a descendant of Roger Cook and Ann Ledley of Pickworth Lincolnshire.

my mother is Margaret Burniston and she descends from James cook via James and Margaret Fleck
I think that makes her the 7th great niece of James Cook and myself the 8th nephew.
