Hi My paternal grandfather (John Pool Morrison) was 2nd cousin to Horatio Stratton Carter and I believe Horatio was a direct descendant of Margaret Cook via her daughter Grace Carter,. My late aunt Joan Marshall Morrison received a letter from Rod Fleck in Australia, confirming our lineage to the Cook family. Sadly my aunt passed away in 2013 and so far been unable to find the aforementioned letter. Though my aunt stated she must have lost it during one of her many house moves.

Mackenzie, thank you for your enquiry. Most people who have Captain James Cook as a Great Uncle are related through descent from his sister Margaret. There are no known lines of descent from any of his brothers.

David, that is great news about your ancestor Commodore William Wilson of H.E.I.C.
There was no genealogical link between Captain Cook's family and the Wilson's, nor would I have expected one, as they came from different classes in society. But that did not stop them becoming good friends. You probably already know that Captain and Mrs Cook stayed at Great Ayton Hall as Wilson's guest for Christmas 1771.

Thank you. I would be happy to share any information with you. John William Carter was a twin. They were born in 1766. His brother was James. Ralph was born in 1764. There may be others. Their parents were George Carter and Ann(e) Potts, married in 1759. This link is helpful as it contains details of local parish registers. https://archive.org/stream/registersofmarsk00mars/registersofmarsk00mars_djvu.txt

Carol, congratulations on discovering your genealogical link to Captain Cook. There is a Fleck family tree available on-line at http://www.winthrop.dk/cooktree.html
The family tree does not show any of the brothers or sisters of John William CARTER who married Grace FLECK, so thank you for that new information.

I have just stumbled across this site whilst research my family tree and discovering I am related to Captain James Cook through his sister Margaret's son-in-law William Carter (who married Grace Fleck). I am a direct descendant of his brother, Ralph Carter. It's all very exciting. My maiden name is Hall and I still live in Redcar, North Yorkshire, the town Margaret Cook lived with her husband and her family. I look forward to learning a lot more.

Glenn, thank you for your complimentary comments about the website.
I will send you some material off-line about the Flecks, it will be good to have a family descendant as a member.

Hello I just wanted to say what a great society you have here, I plan to join in the not to distant future. My grandmother is Hermoyne Isabel Fleck and I believe Margaret Cook is my 5th Great Grandmother, and good old Capt James is my 6th great Uncle. I grew up among a great deal of Cook stories and genuine memorabilia, including letters from the Queen, all collected over a lifetime by my Great Uncle Cecil Fleck. Unfortunately he was targeted in a robbery in his older years and his collection was completely stolen. Keep up the great work, cheers Glenn.
