Ice! Exploring the Far South’ at CCMM, Whitby until 31 October 2023

Ice! Exploring the Far South is a special exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. It was on this expedition that Cpt Cook discover the island of South Georgia. It was a voyage full of danger, adventure and resolution – as in the name of Cook’s ships! The exhibition explores themes such as how the crews managed in the extreme cold, what precautions were taken for their health and what the legacies of the voyage were. It takes South Georgia as an example of the expected and unanticipated consequences of putting an island on the map!

Location: Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Grape Lane, Whitby, UK.
