`Joseph Poole joined Discovery on 29 July, 1776, at Plymouth. He was a Marine Private from 33 Company, Plymouth Division. ``
`Poole was punished twice. First, on 6 October, 1776, in the Atlantic sailing to the Cape of Good Hope. Captain Charles Clerke “punish’d [him] with a dozen Lashes for quarrelling & fighting”. ``
`Secondly, on 28 January, 1777, at Adventure Bay, Tasmania. Clerke wrote, “The Guard I had sent with the Parties on shore which consisted of the following Marines, Hamlet Thompson, Geo: Moody, Ben: Harriot, Jos: Pool & Willm Broom, stole some Liquor & made themselves exceedingly drunk, for which they receivd a dozen lashes each in the Morning”. ``
`Poole was born in Staplegrove, near Taunton in Somerset, in 1754. He was one of six sons and two daughters of William and Sarah Poole. One of Joseph’s brothers was Robert, who had a son Robert who became a whaling captain, and who rounded Cape Horn at least seventeen times. ``
`Joseph Poole died on 3 October, 1791, and was buried at St. John’s Church, Staplegrove, in the family vault. ``
`A memorial at Staplegrove church reads, “Sacred to the memory of Joseph Poole, who after sailing round the globe with Captn Cooke departed this life Octr 3rd 1791”. ``
