On 17 November, 1769, James Cook wrote “At 6 AM fetched close under the lee of the northernmost Island in sight, then tacked and stood to the Southward untill a 11 when we tack'd and stood to the Nd”.

Joseph Banks wrote “Foul wind and blowing fresh, so that we did not come near enough to the land to make many observations”.
