Statue of Cook at James Cook High School, Manurewa, South Auckland, New Zealand

Description:
The 1½ tonne statue cast in bronze, is from one which was carved from a block of Carrara marble, imported from Italy by the Captain Cook Brewery in Newmarket, Auckland.
Three replica statues were cast from the original marble one, the two are located at Kaiti Hill, Gisborne, and the present Brewery premises at The Pride, East Tamaki, New Zealand.

History:
The statue is cast in bronze, from an original one which was carved in Sydney by an Italian sculptor in the 1880s, possibly Achille Simonetti, and stood at the gates of Cook’s Brewery in Auckland for many years.
This bronze copy was one of three cast at DMF Foundry in Auckland.
The school opened in February, 1968.
New Zealand Breweries gave the school a grant towards the cost of the statue, and loaned its own copy for the official opening of the school which was held in July 1969, on the Saturday nearest to the 201st anniversary of the Endeavour sailing from Plymouth, England.
The school motto is ‘Endeavour’, from Captain Cook’s ship, reflecting how the crew persevered  to meet their goal,
