On the eastern side of this strip of land is the great Southern Ocean, a part of which is Adventure Bay. On the western side is Simpson Bay which opens into D'Entrecasteaux Channel.
This channel was named after the French Explorer, Bruni D'Entrecasteaux. Bruny Island was also named after him. At the highest point on the isthmus is Truganini's Lookout, a memorial to the last aboriginal in Tasmania. |
Taken from Davey's Point looking towards Penguin Island. Many famous explorers have visited this bay. The first was Tasman in 1642; he did not land. Next to arrive was Furneaux in 1773.
Cook made a visit in 1777. Bligh of the Bounty made four visits to the Bay. |
