THE AFTERMATH OF ENDEAVOUR

Banks and Solander were back. Endeavour had sailed around the world. Excitement ran high, in that summer of 1771, and the London newspapers knew whose voyage it was. The young man of wealth and talent stepped ashore to the acclaim of an admiring public, and the famous student of Linnaeus basked in the reflected glow. The plaudits of the press sang of their exploits. Before long Joseph Banks esteemed himself the national expert on voyages of exploration. The fortunate youth was home again in a fashionable section of London, and the carriages of the nobility were drawing up before the elegant town house at Number 14 New Burlington Street. Cook was forgotten.
